Ensure George Washington’s timeless legacy lives on

Ensure George Washington’s timeless legacy lives on

“Our cause is noble. It is the cause of Mankind.”
— George Washington to James Warren, March 31, 1779

This campaign will ensure that Mount Vernon does not waver from its standards or mission.

Mount Vernon is owned and maintained for the people of the United States by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, a private, non-profit organization. We do not accept government funding and rely upon private contributions to

help preserve George Washington's home and legacy.

The future of George Washington’s beloved home depends on the long-term financial foundation of our institution.

Growing the Endowment

Growing the Endowment

Mount Vernon’s annual budget is heavily dependent on revenues from strong and steady visitation. We rely on an income stream that is vulnerable to climate, economic, and social factors largely beyond our control.

To maintain a position of financial strength, mitigate risks, and safeguard our assets, our endowment must also grow.

A larger endowment will enable us to:

  • Sustain the excellent stewardship of our collection and the acquisition of original objects and manuscripts.
  • Support scholars and leaders in preservation, horticulture, and education.
  • Secure funding for both residential and regional education programs.
  • Support research and programming around Washington’s legacy.
Investing in Leadership

Investing in Leadership

We know that the success of our mission to preserve, educate, and inspire involves the entire Mount Vernon family. As a result, we seek to endow key leadership positions at Mount Vernon.

The continued excellence of the visitor experience relies on the leadership, scholarship, and focus of our capable employees. The maintenance, interpretation, and presentation of the estate and of the lives of George and Martha Washington are intimately tied to the quality and strength of our staff.

By endowing key positions, we signal how important these roles are to the life and management of Mount Vernon.

Increasing Our Annual Fund

Increasing Our Annual Fund

This campaign seeks significant growth in the annual fund, the foundation of all unrestricted support, to ensure that Mount Vernon does not waver from its standards or its mission.

Mount Vernon relies upon robust annual support to ensure that the operating budget can sustain its day-to-day operations.

While the combined revenue from admissions, membership, food and beverage, and retail funds a portion of operating needs, it is insufficient to cover all of the expenses necessary to maintain the 400-acre estate.

The unrestricted funds raised annually help to close this gap between operating revenues and expenses. In tandem with the draw from the endowment, strong and growing annual support is vital to the ongoing operations of the institution and eases the risks of attendance-sensitive revenues.
